Hundreds of thousands of people traverse midtown Manhattan every day. They rely on the district’s transportation infrastructure, which includes two major transit hubs: Penn Station and the Port Authority Bus Terminal (PABT), as well as subways, bus lines, bike paths and sidewalks. Our Transportation & Environment (T&E) committee is tasked with studying and offering recommendations to improve this busy and essential network.
Among the district’s biggest transportation needs are rehauls of Penn Station and the Port Authority Bus Terminal. CB5 has long advocated for a better Penn Station, including the move of Madison Square Garden to a different location. Moving MSG would allow for Penn Station to be transformed into a modern, world-class hub and provide dignity to everyone who uses it. Intercity buses are clogging our streets because of PABT’s lack of capacity. The facility desperately needs to be updated and expanded to give these buses a place to go. Two other major projects in the works are Gateway, a proposed cross-Hudson tunnel for Amtrak and NJ Transit, and MTA’s East Side Access for LIRR trains.
The T&E committee reviews applications that involve the district’s streets and sidewalks, such as bus stop applications, proposed changes to street use, revocable consent applications and more.
Generally meets on the last Monday of the month at 6pm. Meeting time and location subject to change. Please refer to our calendar.
